Factors Affecting Auditor Independence in Inspection of Regional Government Financial Statements in the North Sumatra Province Environment

Introduction

In the context of examining local government financial statements, auditor independence becomes a crucial aspect that affects the quality of audit results. The independence of auditors is essential in ensuring transparency and accountability of local government financial statements. This study aims to identify the factors that affect simultaneously and partially the auditor's independence at the Representative Office of the Republic of Indonesia Supreme Audit Board (BPK-RI) in Medan, North Sumatra. Through a descriptive research design that uses causal statistics, this study examines the main characteristics of the research variables and demographic data of respondents, which consist of independent auditors in BPK-RI.

Background

The importance of auditor independence cannot be overstated in the context of local government financial statements. Auditors play a critical role in ensuring that financial statements are accurate, reliable, and presented in a fair and transparent manner. However, the independence of auditors can be compromised by various factors, including audit experience, work stress, knowledge, and reward and punishment systems. Methodology

This study used a descriptive research design that employed causal statistics to examine the factors affecting auditor independence. The population consisted of 114 auditors, and the sample used amounted to 68 auditors through the purposive sampling method. The analyzed data came from primary and secondary data. This study examined how the influence of audit experience, work stress, knowledge, and reward and punishment systems on auditor independence. To analyze data, the statistical method used was a multiple linear regression, which was first tested for classic assumptions.

Results

The results showed that audit experience, work stress, knowledge, and reward and punishment systems have a significant influence, both partially and simultaneously, on auditor independence. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the factors that influence auditor independence in BPK-RI, especially in Medan, North Sumatra.
