Introduction

Hospitals, both government and private, play a crucial role in providing healthcare services to the community. However, they also generate a significant amount of waste, including medical waste that poses a substantial risk to environmental pollution and public health. Inappropriate medical waste management can lead to disease transmission and other negative impacts. This study aims to analyze the implementation of medical solid waste management at Hospital X (Government Owned) and Y (Private) Hospital located in Tebing Tinggi City during 2018.

Background

Medical waste is a type of waste that is generated from healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. It includes waste such as syringes, needles, gloves, and other materials that are contaminated with blood, bodily fluids, or other infectious materials. Research Methodology

This study uses a descriptive method that prioritizes observations and in-depth interviews to get a comprehensive picture of the management of medical solid waste in the two hospitals. Observation was carried out to directly assess the practice of waste management, while the interview aims to explore further information from medical personnel and waste managers. The study also uses a scoring system to assess the implementation of medical solid waste management in the two hospitals.

Research Result

The results showed that Hospital X faced several obstacles in managing medical solid waste. Human resources in this hospital do not have special training in managing medical waste. In addition, they also do not use complete personal protective equipment (PPE), which is important in protecting themselves from the risk of dangerous medical waste exposure. Facilities and infrastructure for management of medical solid waste in Hospital X are also declared inadequate. On the other hand, the Hospital Y also showed a similar problem. Waste management staff in Hospital Y have not received special training and their waste management facilities are also incomplete.

However, Hospital Y received a score of 75% in the assessment of waste management, while Hospital X only obtained a score of 55%. Both values are still far from the criteria stipulated in the Decree of the Minister of Health (Kepmenkes) 1204/Menkes/SK/X/2004, which regulates the management of medical waste in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that both hospitals need to improve their management of medical solid waste to meet the established standards.

Analysis of Results

The results of the study indicate that both hospitals face similar problems in managing medical solid waste. The lack of special training for human resources and the inadequate facilities and infrastructure for waste management are the main obstacles faced by both hospitals. The study also highlights the importance of using complete personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect medical personnel from the risk of dangerous medical waste exposure.

Recommendation

Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that the two hospitals take several steps to improve. First, training for medical solid waste management staff must be immediately held to increase their knowledge and skills in handling waste safely and effectively. Second, it is important to improve the facilities and facilities of medical waste management in accordance with the applicable environmental health requirements in Indonesia.

By carrying out these steps, it is expected that the management of medical solid waste in both hospitals can be more optimal and meet established standards, thereby reducing the risk of environmental pollution and protecting public health. Good waste management not only creates a safer hospital environment, but also contributes to better overall community health.
