The Effect of Exposure to Herbal Cigarette Smoke and Mild Cigarette Smoke on Microstructure of the Heart Mice (Mus Musculus L.)

Introduction

Research on the effects of exposure to herbal cigarette smoke and mild cigarette smoke on the microstructure of the heart mice (Mus Musculus L.) has been a topic of interest in recent years. The study aims to investigate the impact of these types of cigarette smoke on the liver microstructure of mice. The research was conducted from May to November 2012 in the Laboratory of Animal Structure, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra, Medan.

The study applied a complete random design method (RAL) involving three treatment groups: control group without treatment (K), groups exposed to herbal cigarette smoke (PA), and groups exposed to mild cigarette smoke (PB). Each group consisted of nine test animals, and they were exposed to cigarette smoke as much as three stems for 15 minutes every day for 14 days. The observations were made on the morphology of the liver, and statistical analysis was performed to determine the significance of the damage to hepatocyte cells.

Results

The observations showed that the morphology of the liver in the PA and PB groups looked pale and spotted. Meanwhile, the morphology of the liver in the control group also showed a pale color. Through statistical analysis, it was found that there was significant damage to hepatocyte cells in the PA treatment group compared to the control group and PB (P <0.05). The highest average level of liver damage was recorded in the PA group, which was 187.04, while the control group showed the lowest value, which was 70.15.

Further observation of the cell nucleus form revealed a significant difference between the PA and K groups, while the PB group did not show a significant difference with K (P> 0.05). The average cell nucleus size in the PA group reached 76.89, while in the control group only 51.26. The results of this study illustrated that exposure to cigarette smoke had a negative impact on the liver microstructure of mice.
