The Effectiveness of Health Education Using the Media Playing Puzzles and Snakes and Ladders Towards the Knowledge and Attitudes of Elementary School Students in Grade IV and Class V Regarding Diarrhea Prevention

Introduction

Diarrhea is one of the most common health problems that continue to affect children in Indonesia, resulting in a significant mortality rate. Effective precautions are needed to prevent diarrhea, including environmental sanitation and health promotion. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of health education using game media, namely puzzles and snakes and ladders, to increase the knowledge and attitudes of grade IV and V students at SDN 013872 Lapan Market, Air Putih District, Batubara Regency, in preventing diarrhea.

Background of the Study

Diarrhea is a major public health concern in Indonesia, with a high incidence rate and significant mortality rate. Effective prevention measures are needed to reduce the incidence of diarrhea. Health education is a crucial component of disease prevention, and it can be an attractive approach for children when using game media. Puzzles and snakes and ladders are two forms of games that can facilitate the learning process by conveying health messages in it.

Methodology

This study used a Quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest, involving 32 students divided into two groups. Each group received treatment using different media, namely puzzle media for one group and snake ladder media for another group. Data analysis was carried out using paired T tests and independent sample t tests.

Results

The results of the paired T test show that the two media, both puzzles and snakes and ladders, are effective in increasing students' knowledge and attitudes about diarrhea prevention. However, the independent sample t test shows that the puzzle media has a higher effectiveness compared to the media of snakes and ladders in increasing students' knowledge and attitudes.

Discussion

This finding shows the importance of collaboration between the Health Office and the Coal Education Office, through Puskesmas and Elementary Schools, in carrying out health education. Health education which is carried out in an interesting way like this, can contribute to increasing students' awareness and understanding of the importance of prevention of diarrhea. Furthermore, SDN 013872 Lapan Market can take advantage of the results of this study through the School Health Business Program (UKS) to continue the health education that has started.

Conclusion

Thus, an innovative approach in health education through the game not only makes learning more enjoyable, but also has a positive impact on students' knowledge and attitudes. This research can be a reference for the development of health education programs at elementary school level, so that health education can be more integrated in the school curriculum and achieve more effective disease prevention goals.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Collaboration between Health Office and Coal Education Office: Collaboration between the Health Office and the Coal Education Office is essential in carrying out health education. Puskesmas and Elementary Schools should work together to develop and implement health education programs.
Use of Game Media: Game media, such as puzzles and snakes and ladders, can be an effective way to convey health messages to children. Health education programs should incorporate game media to make learning more enjoyable and effective.
Continuation of Health Education: SDN 013872 Lapan Market can continue the health education that has started through the School Health Business Program (UKS). This program can help to increase students' awareness and understanding of the importance of prevention of diarrhea.
Development of Health Education Programs: This research can be a reference for the development of health education programs at elementary school level. Health education programs should be more integrated in the school curriculum and achieve more effective disease prevention goals.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including:

Small Sample Size: The sample size of this study is small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
