Introduction

Orchids are one of the most diverse and widespread plant families in the world, with over 30,000 species found in almost every habitat on Earth. In Indonesia, orchids are an important part of the country's biodiversity, with many species found in the tropical forests of Sumatra, including the Aek Nauli forest in Simalungun Regency. This study aims to investigate the composition and structure of orchid plants in the Aek Nauli forest, with a focus on the diversity and distribution of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids.

Methodology

The study was conducted from December 2010 to March 2011, with data collection taking place at five locations in the Aek Nauli forest, Simalungun Regency. The locations were chosen using the purposive sampling method, with a focus on areas with different heights and elevations. At each location, a 5 m x 5 m plot was used to collect data on the composition and structure of orchid plants. The data was obtained through a path method, with a focus on the types and abundance of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids.

Composition of Terrestrial Orchids and Epifits

The results of the study showed that there were 50 types of orchids found in the Aek Nauli forest, with 22 genera represented. Of these, 12 types were terrestrial orchids, while 38 types were epiphytic orchids. The highest composition of terrestrial orchids was found at an altitude of 1300-1400 meters above sea level (MDPL), with the dominant type being Apostasia sp., which had a relative density value of 73.33%. In contrast, the highest composition of epiphytic orchids was found at an altitude of 1400-1500 MDPL, with the type of Coelogyne Brachygyna as the dominant species and a relative density value of 81.77%.

Diversity and Uniformity Index

Further analysis of the data showed that the diversity and uniformity index of terrestrial orchids were 1,719 and 0.883, respectively. In contrast, the diversity and uniformity index of epiphytic orchids were 3.134 and 0.961, respectively. This indicates that the diversity of epiphytic orchids in the Aek Nauli forest is higher than that of terrestrial orchids.

Equality Index

The analysis of the similarity index showed that terrestrial orchids had the highest similarity between 1200-1300 meters above sea level and 1500-1600 MDPL, with a value of 54.54%. In contrast, epiphytic orchids had the highest similarity between the height of 1200-1300 MDPL and 1300-1400 MDPL, with a value of 76%. This finding suggests a regular distribution pattern for both types of orchids in the study area.
