Introduction

The increasing demand for food and energy has led to the expansion of the palm oil industry, resulting in a significant amount of waste generated from palm oil mills. One of the major by-products of palm oil mills is boiler ash, which is rich in potassium (K) and other essential nutrients. In this study, we explored the potential of using palm oil mill boilers as a substitute for Muriate of Potash (MOP) fertilizer, a widely used potassium fertilizer in agriculture. Our research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of boiler ash as a source of potassium and its impact on soil pH, plant growth, and nutrient absorption.

Methodology

Our study employed a randomized group design, where boiler ash and MOP fertilizer were applied at different doses (0, 5, 100, and 150 ppm K) to soil inceptisols. The parameters measured included soil pH, soil-remedies, plant height, root dry weight, canopy dry weight, and plant absorption. The experiment was repeated three times, and the data were collected until the end of the vegetative phase of plants.

Results

The results of our study showed that boiler ash was able to increase soil pH from 5.60 (control) to 6.21 (150 ppm K from ash boiler), while MOP fertilizer reduced soil pH from 5.60 (control) to 5.29 (150 ppm K from MOP). Both boiler ash and MOP fertilizer were able to increase the K-exchange and absorption of K, but the availability of K from boiler ash was slower than MOP fertilizer. The best dose to increase K-exchange and absorption of K from boiler ash and MOP fertilizer was 100 ppm K.

Our study highlights the potential of using palm oil mill boilers as an environmentally friendly alternative to MOP fertilizer.
