Introduction

The identification of disaster victims can be a challenging and time-consuming process, especially when only certain body parts are found. In such situations, the use of odontometric examination of the teeth can be a valuable tool to estimate height and aid in the identification process. Teeth are a unique and hard tissue that is not easily damaged, making them an important part of recognizing individuals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the percentage of successful height estimates using the Carrea Index in Batak students aged 18-25 years at the University of North Sumatra.

Background

Odontometric examination is a method used to estimate height by measuring the length of the teeth. The Carrea Index is a widely used method for this purpose, as it provides a reliable and accurate estimate of height. However, the effectiveness of this method can vary depending on the population being studied. In this study, we aim to investigate the percentage of successful height estimates using the Carrea Index in Batak students.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The participants were Batak students aged 18-25 years at the University of North Sumatra. The height of the participants was measured using a height measuring device (Staturemeter), while the length of the teeth was measured using digital caliper according to the Carrea Index provisions. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation test.

Results

The results of this study showed that the average height and estimated height of men were higher than women. Analysis using an independent T-test showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). In addition, the estimated height of the right and left teeth for each sex was tested using one-way ANOVA analysis, which did not show a significant difference (P > 0.05). The percentage of success in height estimates using the Carrea Index for men was 66.7%, higher than women who reached 63.3%. However, when tested by the Chi-Square test, there were no significant differences found (P > 0.05).

Correlation between Height and Estimated Height

The correlation between height and estimated height was analyzed using the Pearson correlation test, which showed a moderate strength of correlation (R = 0.430-0.459). This suggests that there is a significant relationship between height and estimated height using the Carrea Index.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate that the percentage of successful height estimates using the Carrea Index in Batak students is classified as good. The study makes an important contribution in the field of odontology and forensics, especially in Indonesia, where this method can be used as a tool in identifying disaster victims when other information is not available. A deeper understanding of the relationship between the characteristics of teeth and height can be a foothold for further research, as well as practical applications in the field to increase the effectiveness of victim identification.
