The Relationship Between Behavior and Duration of Computer Use with Complaints of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) in Students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra

Introduction

In today's digital age, the use of computers has become an integral part of our daily lives, especially among students who must complete assignments and learn online. However, excessive use of computers can trigger various health problems, including Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), CVS is a complex problem that involves visual impairment and eye health due to prolonged use of computers. A study conducted by Rahman et al. (2011) shows that respondents who use computers for more than 5 hours per day have a higher risk of experiencing CVS. This study aims to determine the relationship between behavior and the duration of computer use with CVS complaints in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Research Methodology

This study uses an observational analytic approach with cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used is stratified random sampling, with a total of 90 respondents. Data is collected through online questionnaires that are distributed in the form of Google Form. This questionnaire is designed to gather information about behavior when using a computer, duration of use, and other factors that can affect the risk of CVS.

Research Results

From data analysis, several important results were found. The Chi-Square test value shows that the behavior when using a computer has a p = 0.044 (p <0.05) value, which means there is a significant relationship between the behavior and CVS complaints. The duration of exposure to the computer screen continuously also shows significant results with p = 0.004 (p <0.05). In addition, the time of rest after using a computer has a p = 0.026 (p <0.05) value, and the visibility of the eye to the computer shows the results p = 0,000 (p <0.05).

However, there are several factors that do not show significant relationships, such as sex (p = 0.0764) and the use of glasses (p = 0.0903).

Additional Analysis and Explanation

The results of this study underline the importance of good behavior when using a computer to prevent CVS. For example, the correct sitting position, the use of screen filters, and proper lighting settings can help reduce eye tension. In addition, the duration of use of a computer that is too long without rest can worsen the symptoms of CVS. Therefore, it is recommended that students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra and other computer users follow the rules of 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look at objects that are 20 feet for 20 seconds.

Visibility is also an important factor that needs attention. A distance that is too close can cause eye muscle tension, which can contribute to the onset of CVS symptoms. Make adjustments to the screen distance and sitting position can help reduce the risk.

Although the sex and use of glasses do not show a significant relationship in this study, it is essential to remember that each individual has different characteristics and habits in using computers. Therefore, education about good behavior when using a computer needs to be broadly socialized, especially among students.

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the behavior when using a computer, the duration of the screen exposure that is constant, the length of rest after the use of computers, and visibility to the screen have a significant influence on CVS complaints among students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. For this reason, it is crucial for all computer users to apply healthy habits to prevent vision disorders that can interfere with daily activities.
