Introduction

Mangrove forest restoration in Indonesia faces various challenges in achieving success. One of the main obstacles is the presence of hydrodynamic disorders such as tidal waves that can cause coastal abrasion. To reduce the risk of failure caused by coastal abrasion, the selection of the right mangrove seeds is very important, especially in a dynamic coastal environment. This study aims to collect data on the physiology of mangrove plants that are appropriate and feasible to be planted in dynamic environmental conditions, in order to reduce the risk of mangrove forest restoration failure caused by abrasion and sea waves.

Background

Mangrove forests play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and coastal protection. However, mangrove forest restoration in Indonesia experiences various challenges in achieving success. One of the main obstacles faced is the presence of hydrodynamic disorders such as tidal waves that can cause coastal abrasion. To reduce the risk of failure caused by coastal abrasion, the selection of the right mangrove seeds is very important, especially in a dynamic coastal environment.

Methodology

The study was conducted from September 2019 to June 2021. The results showed that the species of Avicennia Marina and Avicennia Alba, each with 75 samples, had different physiological data. The average Avicennia marina plant height is 6.62 cm, while Avicennia Alba reaches 83.69 cm. The average stem diameter for Avicennia Marina is 0.22 cm, while for Avicennia Alba is 0.9 cm. In addition, the average total root length for Avicennia Marina is 5.2 cm and for Avicennia Alba reaches 60.24 cm. The average primary root diameter of Avicennia Marina is 0.31 cm, while for Avicennia Alba it reaches 1.33 cm. The average diameter of the secondary root of Avicennia Marina is 0.05 cm and for Avicennia Alba reaches 0.75 cm.

Results

The results of the study showed that Avicennia Alba has a better growth in terms of size compared to Avicennia Marina. Avicennia Alba reaches a height of 83.69 cm, while Avicennia Marina reaches a height of 6.62 cm. The average stem diameter for Avicennia Alba is 0.9 cm, while for Avicennia Marina is 0.22 cm. In addition, the average total root length for Avicennia Alba is 60.24 cm, while for Avicennia Marina is 5.2 cm.

Discussion

The selection of mangrove species such as Avicennia Marina and Avicennia Alba is not only based on physiological data, but also on the ability of each species in dealing with changing environmental conditions. Avicennia marina species, which are lower in height and stem diameter than Avicennia Alba, may be more easily adapted in more extreme conditions, but Avicennia Alba shows better growth in terms of size. In the context of mangrove rehabilitation, combining the two species can be an effective strategy to increase the success of mangrove forest restoration.

Conclusion

The stability of Avicennia Marina and Avicennia Alba's seedlings towards sediment abrasion is very dependent on various factors, ranging from the selection of seeds to effective management practices. Community involvement and awareness of the importance of mangroves for coastal ecosystems are the key in the success of the mangrove forest restoration program in Indonesia.
