The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Spiritual Welfare in Nursing Professional Students of the University of North Sumatra During the Pandemic Covid-19

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on individual lives, particularly for nursing professional students of the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra (USU) who are undergoing practice at the University of North Sumatra Hospital (USU Hospital). During this crisis period, students are required to remain professional and adapt to a high-pressure environment, which can affect their emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare. This study aims to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare in USU Nursing Professional students serving in USU Hospital during the pandemic.

Background

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize and understand emotions in oneself and others, and to use this awareness to guide thought and behavior. It involves being able to manage one's own emotions, as well as being able to empathize with others. Spiritual welfare, on the other hand, refers to the state of being that is characterized by a sense of purpose, meaning, and connection to something greater than oneself. It is often associated with a sense of well-being, happiness, and fulfillment.

In the context of nursing, emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare are critical components of a nurse's ability to provide high-quality care. Nurses who are emotionally intelligent are better able to manage their own emotions, as well as those of their patients and colleagues. They are also more likely to be empathetic and compassionate, which are essential qualities for building trust and rapport with patients. Similarly, nurses who have a strong sense of spiritual welfare are more likely to be motivated and inspired to provide care that is guided by a sense of purpose and meaning.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational descriptive design. A total of 98 respondents were taken through a simple random sampling technique. The instruments applied consisted of questionnaires about demographic data, emotional intelligence, and spiritual well-being.

Results

The results showed a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare in USU Nursing Professional students, with a P value of 0.002 (<0.05) obtained through the Chi-Square test analysis. On average, nursing profession students have a high level of emotional intelligence and good spiritual welfare. Of the total respondents, 56.1% have high emotional intelligence, while 43.9% have moderate emotional intelligence. In terms of spiritual welfare, 63.3% of respondents are classified as good, and 36.7% are sufficient.

Discussion

The findings of this study suggest that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare in USU Nursing Professional students. This is consistent with previous research that has found a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and spiritual well-being. The results also suggest that nursing profession students have a high level of emotional intelligence and good spiritual welfare, which is essential for providing high-quality care.

High emotional intelligence allows students to manage their emotions better, adapt to changes, and communicate effectively with colleagues and patients. This is very important in the hospital environment that demands empathy and teamwork. Conversely, good spiritual welfare provides the moral support and motivation needed in facing challenges during the pandemic period.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study found a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare in USU Nursing Professional students. The results suggest that nursing profession students have a high level of emotional intelligence and good spiritual welfare, which is essential for providing high-quality care. The findings of this study have implications for nursing education and practice, and highlight the importance of developing emotional intelligence and spiritual welfare in nursing students.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
