Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugar levels due to interference in insulin secretion. This causes various problems in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Adequate knowledge about nutritional needs is very important for patients with diabetes mellitus, because it can have a significant impact on the management of their blood sugar levels. Therefore, this research was conducted to assess the relationship between family knowledge about nutrition with the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients at Medan Human Rights Hospital.

The data collected was then analyzed using the Spearman's Rank test. The analysis shows the value of P = 0.184, which is greater than 0.05. This indicates that there is no significant relationship between family knowledge and the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients at the hospital.

The results of this study indicate that although family knowledge of nutritional needs does not seem to have a direct effect on the management of the patient's diabetes mellitus, this can be caused by several factors. In addition, there is a possibility that an understanding of the nutritional needs of diabetes mellitus patients is not sufficiently applied in everyday life.
