In this study, we examined the diversity of macrozoobentos in the downstream of the Bah Tongguran River to determine its potential as a water quality indicator.

The study was conducted between July and September 2016, using a purposive sampling method to select sampling points based on certain considerations. Macrozoobentos samples were collected using Surber Net nets and identified in the PSDAL Laboratory of the Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra, Medan. The diversity of macrozoobentos was calculated using the Diversity Index (H') method.

Results

The results of the study showed that the diversity of macrozoobenthos in the Bah Tongguran River was quite high, with three phylum, five classes, eight orders, 13 families, and 14 genus macrozoobentos identified. The highest macrozoobenthos diversity was found in station III with a value of 1.89, while the lowest diversity was in station I with a value of 1.46. These results suggest that the diversity of macrozoobentos in the Bah Tongguran River is influenced by the physical and chemical conditions of the water in each location.
