Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus has become a global health crisis, resulting in a significant number of cases and deaths worldwide. To combat this pandemic, vaccination efforts have been implemented as a crucial measure to break the chain of disease transmission. The success of vaccination depends on various factors, including the nutritional status of individuals, which can be measured by body mass index (BMI). Nutritional status plays a vital role in the immune system's ability to respond to vaccines, and its impact on the formation of SARS-COV-2 antibodies after vaccination is a topic of interest in the medical community.

Objective

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between nutritional status and changes in SARS-COV-2 antibody titers after the Coronovac vaccine vaccination in SMA Negeri 1 Namorambe students, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra Province. Understanding the effect of nutritional status on vaccine response is essential in developing effective vaccination strategies.

Method

This study employed a descriptive analytic approach with a cross-sectional method, conducted from August to December 2022. A total of 385 students participated in the study, with primary data collection through a questionnaire and blood sampling from the fingers. The RBD screening examination and anti-S1 antibodies were conducted using the ELISA method in the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Results

The study revealed that there were more female subjects than male subjects, with an average age of 16 years (range 14-19 years) and a standard deviation of 1.03. The history of COVID-19 exposure was reported by 8 people (4.0%), and 2 people (1.0%) had been confirmed infected with Covid-19 from a total of 198 subjects studied. In terms of nutritional status, subjects with normal BMI accounted for 57.1%, while 14.6% were underweight, 13.1% were overweight, and 12.1% and 3.0% had mild to moderate and severe malnutrition, respectively.

Conclusion

The results showed that there were differences in S1 antibody titers in each examination, with an increase in titers over time (p = 0.0001). However, there was no significant relationship between nutritional status based on BMI and changes in SARS-COV-2 antibody titers on H0, H14, H28, and H60 (P> 0.05) examinations. Additionally, an increase in S1 antibody titers in infected groups compared to uninfected groups on the early days (H-0) showed a significant difference (p = 0.001).
