Introduction

The quality of water is a crucial aspect of public health, and the presence of heavy metals such as iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) can have significant effects on human health. In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of iron and copper in raw water and reservoir water at the PDAM Tirtana Sisingamaraja center using the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. This technique measures metal elements based on radiation absorption by free atoms, providing accurate results for metal content analysis.

Methodology

The atomic absorption spectrophotometry method was used to analyze the metal content in raw water and reservoir water samples. This method is a widely accepted technique for determining metal concentrations in water samples. The results of the analysis were compared to the quality requirements of drinking water determined by the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Health Regulation No. 492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the iron content in raw water samples ranged from 0.008 mg/L to 1,984 mg/L, with an average value of 0.631 mg/L. In contrast, the iron content in reservoir water was recorded at 0.030 mg/L, 0.030 mg/L, and 0.066 mg/L. For copper levels, the result of raw water showed a concentration of 0.008 mg/L for each sample, while the copper content in reservoir water was also recorded uniformly at 0.008 mg/L.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the iron and copper content in reservoir water meets the quality requirements of drinking water determined by the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Health Regulation No. 492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010. This is a significant finding, as high levels of heavy metals can have adverse effects on human health. The iron content in raw water showed variations, but the levels found in reservoir water were within safe limits, indicating an effective water treatment process by PDAM Tirtanadi.
