The Effect of Counseling Health Workers on the Selection of Long-Term Contraceptive Methods in Mothers at Padang Bulan Selayang II Puskesmas

Introduction

Reproductive rights are a fundamental right for each individual and partner to determine when they want to have children, how many children want to be born, and the birth distance between children. One effort to realize these rights is through the use of contraception. The use of long-term contraceptive methods (MKJP) is a crucial aspect of family planning, as it allows individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. This study aims to explore the effect of counseling given by health workers on the selection of long-term contraceptive methods (MKJP) at Padang Bulan Selayang II Health Center, Medan Selayang District, in 2016.

Background

The use of MKJP has been increasing globally, as it provides a convenient and effective way to prevent unintended pregnancies. However, the selection of MKJP is often influenced by various factors, including age, parity, knowledge, frequency, and clarity of information. Health workers play a crucial role in providing counseling and information to individuals about MKJP, which can influence their decision-making process. This study aims to investigate the effect of counseling provided by health workers on the selection of MKJP in mothers at Padang Bulan Selayang II Puskesmas.

Methodology

This study was conducted with a quantitative approach using a cross-sectional design. The destination population was a fertile age pair (PUS) which has the potential to become an acceptor of the Family Planning Program (KB). A total of 108 PUSs were selected systematically by the random sampling method, which was then taken as a research sample. Data was collected using a questionnaire specifically designed to explore information related to the factors that influence the selection of MKJP.

Results

The results of bivariate analysis show that there is a significant relationship between age, parity, knowledge, frequency, and clarity of information with the selection of MKJP, with P-value (p <0.05). However, factors such as income, financing, and support from other parties do not show a significant relationship with the selection of MKJP, with P-Value (P> 0.05). Multivariate analysis shows that there is a regression coefficient in the age and support variables, each of 1.3 and 1.6, which shows the significant influence of the two factors on the selection of MKJP.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that counseling from health workers has an important role in influencing the decision of the fertile age pair in choosing the contraceptive method. Clarity of information provided during the counseling process has proven to have an impact on their understanding and decision. Therefore, it is essential for the government and related agencies to evaluate and improve existing counseling programs. Emphasis on improving the quality and frequency of counseling is very important so that the information conveyed can be clearer and more complete, so that the couple of childbearing age has adequate knowledge in choosing contraceptive methods that are in accordance with their needs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of counseling provided by health workers in influencing the selection of long-term contraceptive methods (MKJP) in mothers at Padang Bulan Selayang II Puskesmas. The results of this study suggest that clarity of information provided during the counseling process has a significant impact on the understanding and decision of the fertile age pair. Therefore, it is essential for the government and related agencies to evaluate and improve existing counseling programs to ensure that individuals have adequate knowledge in choosing contraceptive methods that are in accordance with their needs.
