Spiritual Welfare and Stress of Nursing Students at the University of North Sumatra During Online Learning in the Pandemic Covid-19

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on various aspects of life, including education. The shift to online learning has presented numerous challenges for nursing students at the University of North Sumatra, one of which is the experience of stress. Stress can have a significant impact on the spiritual welfare of students, which is an essential aspect of life that is often overlooked. Spiritual prosperity encompasses feelings of meaning, purpose, and relationships with oneself and others. This study aims to describe the spiritual welfare and stress levels of nursing students during the online learning period.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The research sample consisted of 85 students from the Faculty of Nursing, selected using accidental sampling techniques. The instruments used included questionnaires to collect demographic data, spiritual welfare, and stress levels. The results of the univariate analysis showed that 73 students (85.9%) had high spiritual welfare, while 61 students (71.8%) were categorized as experiencing medium stress.

Demographic Characteristics of the Respondents

The majority of the respondents were 63 years old students (74.1%), and most of them were women with 73 people (85.9%). Many of them also lived in boarding houses, namely 37 people (43.5%), and were Muslims with a total of 41 people (48.2%). Interestingly, the data showed that students with high spiritual welfare tended to experience a lower level of stress.

Analysis of the Data

The analysis of the data highlights the importance of spiritual welfare in overcoming stress, especially in a situation full of pressure such as the pandemic. High spiritual prosperity provides mental support that can help students respond to stress better. This shows that maintaining spiritual well-being can be an important strategy for students in managing stress during online learning.

It is essential to realize that the stress experienced by students not only has an impact on mental health but can also affect their academic performance and social relations. Therefore, educational institutions, including the University of North Sumatra, need to provide adequate support, such as counseling programs, welfare workshops, or activities that can increase student spirituality. With the right support, students are expected to not only reduce their stress levels but also increase spiritual welfare that has a positive impact on their lives.

Conclusion

The results of this study illustrate that most nursing students have good spiritual welfare, even though they experience a moderate level of stress. Improving spiritual welfare can be one way to reduce the stress they experience during online learning periods, and thus, it is essential for all related parties to pay attention to this aspect so that students can go through this difficult time better.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
