The Effect of Government Spending, Investment and Labor Force on Dairi Regency Economic Growth: Econometric Analysis

Introduction

Dairi Regency, a region in North Sumatra, Indonesia, has been experiencing rapid economic growth in recent years. The region's abundant natural resources and developing human resources have created a favorable environment for economic development. However, to sustain and optimize this growth, it is essential to understand the key factors that drive it. This study aims to analyze the effect of government expenditure, investment, and labor force on the economic growth of Dairi Regency, using secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Dairi Regency.

The Importance of Government Expenditure, Investment, and Labor Force in Economic Growth

Government expenditure, investment, and labor force are crucial factors in driving economic growth. Government expenditure can stimulate economic growth by investing in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which can improve the welfare of the community and increase productivity. Investment can also contribute to economic growth by creating new jobs, increasing productivity, and generating revenue. Labor force, on the other hand, is a critical component of economic growth, as it provides the necessary workforce to drive economic activity.

Research Methodology

This study uses an econometric model with the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method to test the effect of independent variables (government expenditure, investment, and labor force) on dependent variables (economic growth measured by Gross Regional Domestic Product - GRDP). The data used in this study are secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Dairi Regency.

Research Result

The analysis shows that government and labor force expenditure has a positive and significant influence on the economic growth of Dairi Regency. This means that an increase in government spending and the number of labor force will encourage economic growth in Dairi Regency. The coefficient of government expenditure is 0.34, indicating that a 1% increase in government expenditure will lead to a 0.34% increase in economic growth. Similarly, the coefficient of labor force is 0.25, indicating that a 1% increase in labor force will lead to a 0.25% increase in economic growth.

Meanwhile, investment has a positive but not significant influence on the economic growth of Dairi Regency. This shows that investment does have an important role in encouraging economic growth, but its effect is not as strong as government and labor force expenditure. The coefficient of investment is 0.15, indicating that a 1% increase in investment will lead to a 0.15% increase in economic growth.

Simultaneously, all variables analyzed in this study have a significant influence on the economic growth of Dairi Regency. This suggests that government expenditure, investment, and labor force are all important factors in driving economic growth in Dairi Regency.

Recommendations and Implications

Based on the results of this study, several recommendations can be submitted to encourage economic growth in Dairi Regency:

Increasing Government Spending

Dairi Regency Government can increase its expenditure for infrastructure, education, health, and other development programs that have a direct impact on the welfare of the community. This can be achieved by allocating a larger budget for these programs and increasing the efficiency of government spending.

Improving the Quality of the Workforce

The government needs to focus on programs that improve the quality and skills of the workforce, such as vocational training and human resource development. This can be achieved by providing training and development programs for workers and increasing the availability of skilled workers in the labor market.

Increasing Investment Appeal

Dairi Regency Government needs to create a conducive investment climate by providing incentives and ease of investors. This can be achieved by simplifying the investment process, reducing regulatory barriers, and providing tax incentives for investors.

Improving the quality and quantity of the workforce, increasing investment, and directed government expenditure, is expected to have a more significant impact on the economic growth of Dairi Regency in the future.

Conclusion

This study has analyzed the effect of government expenditure, investment, and labor force on the economic growth of Dairi Regency. The results show that government and labor force expenditure have a positive and significant influence on economic growth, while investment has a positive but not significant influence. Based on these findings, several recommendations have been submitted to encourage economic growth in Dairi Regency. These recommendations include increasing government spending, improving the quality of the workforce, and increasing investment appeal.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the data used in this study are secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Dairi Regency. This may limit the accuracy and reliability of the results. Secondly, the study only analyzed the effect of government expenditure, investment, and labor force on economic growth, and did not consider other factors that may influence economic growth.

Future Research Directions

Future research can build on this study by analyzing the effect of other factors on economic growth in Dairi Regency. For example, research can be conducted to analyze the effect of infrastructure development, education, and healthcare on economic growth.
