Individual Selection in the Best Rows of Soybean Plants (Glycine Max L. Merrill) M4 Gamma Ray Irradiation Based on the Character of Early Age and High Production

Introduction

Soybean (Glycine Max L. Merrill) is one of the most important commodities in the agricultural sector, particularly in Indonesia. As a major crop, soybean plays a crucial role in supporting national food security and economic growth. However, the production of soybeans is often affected by various factors, including climate change, pests, and diseases. To address these challenges, researchers have been exploring innovative methods to improve the genetic properties of soybeans, including gamma ray irradiation.

This study aims to select individual soybean plants from the best rows of M4 soybean plants that have been irradiated with gamma rays, with a focus on the character of early age and high production. The study was conducted on the experimental land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU) from March to August 2016.

Methodology

The study involved several stages, including gamma ray irradiation, seed germination, and plant growth observation. The M4 soybean plants were irradiated with gamma rays to induce genetic mutations, which can lead to improved traits such as early maturity and high production. The irradiated seeds were then germinated and grown in a controlled environment to observe various growth parameters, including the number of flowering days, plant height, number of productive branches, the number of pods containing seeds, harvest time, number of seeds, seed weight, and weight of 100 seeds.

Results

The results of the study showed that sixteen genotypes of samples exhibited the character of early age and high production. These genotypes were the best result of gamma ray irradiation carried out on M4 soybean plants. The observation of various growth parameters was crucial in assessing the success of irradiation. For example, an earlier flowering day indicates the ability of the plant to adapt better to environmental conditions. In addition, the number of pods and seed weight are key indicators in determining the potential of the harvest.

Discussion

The relationship between the age of the morning and high productivity is an interesting finding of this study. Plants that have shorter ages often experience better adjustments to climate change and pest attacks, which can lead to increased overall agricultural output.
