The Devastating Impact of Air Pollution on Human Health

Air pollution is a pressing global issue that poses a significant threat to human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified SO2 and NO2 gas as hazardous pollutants that can trigger respiratory disorders. This study aims to analyze the risk of exposure to SO2 and NO2 gas from transportation sources to respiratory disorders in street vendors at the Amplas Integrated Terminal in Medan City.

Methodology and Research Design

This study employed an analytic observational method with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 70 street vendors at the terminal. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression tests with a 95% confidence level. The study aimed to identify the factors that contribute to the risk of respiratory disorders in street vendors due to exposure to SO2 and NO2 gas.

Results and Findings

The results of the study revealed that the concentration of SO2 gas (p = 0.001), exposure time (p = 0.014), and body weight (p = 0.011) had a significant effect on respiratory disorders. In contrast, the concentration of NO2 gas (p = 0.418) and the duration of exposure (p = 1,000) did not show a significant effect. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that SO2 gas concentration was a dominant factor that affects respiratory disorders, with the highest Exp (B) coefficient value of 297,341.

The findings of this study indicate that street vendors at the Amplas Integrated Terminal have a high risk of experiencing respiratory problems due to exposure to SO2 and NO2 gas from vehicles.
