The Attitude of Housewives in Urban and Rural Areas Towards the Increase in Rice Prices: A Case Study in Sudirejo Village I Medan District, Medan City and Sidodadi Ramunia Village, Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency

Introduction

The increase in rice prices is a pressing issue in Indonesia, affecting not only the economy but also the daily lives of housewives. This research aims to explore the attitude of housewives in urban and rural areas towards the increase in rice prices, with a focus on Sudirejo Village I Medan District, Medan City, and Sidodadi Ramunia Village, Beringin District, Deli Serdang Regency. By understanding the socio-economic factors that influence their rice consumption, this study hopes to provide valuable insights for policymakers to develop effective strategies to support housewives in facing economic challenges.

Research Methodology

This study employed a case study approach, selecting two locations with distinct characteristics. Sudirejo I Village was chosen due to its strategic location as a food distribution hub, while Sidodadi Ramunia Village was selected for its high rice productivity and large number of housewives. A total of 30 housewives from each location were sampled using the Action Sampling Method.

Data collection involved two sources: primary data through questionnaires and direct interviews, and secondary data from relevant literature. The analysis was conducted using a Likert scale to measure attitudes and Pearson Product Moment correlation to identify relationships between socio-economic factors and rice consumption.

The study yielded several significant findings:

Negative Attitudes in Urban Areas: A staggering 56.66% of housewives in urban areas expressed negative attitudes towards the increase in rice prices, reflecting their dissatisfaction and economic pressure.
Negative Attitude in Rural Areas: Despite being rice producers, 50% of housewives in rural areas also showed negative attitudes, indicating the impact of price increases on their consumption.
Socio-Economic Relations in Urban Areas: A significant relationship was found between socio-economic characteristics, such as age, education level, total income, and the number of family dependents, and rice consumption in urban areas. This suggests that better socio-economic conditions enable families to manage rice consumption even with price increases.
Family Size and Rice Consumption: The study found that the more family members, the higher the need for rice consumption, even with expensive prices.

The results indicate that housewives in both urban and rural areas are affected by the significant increase in rice prices, leading to negative attitudes.
