Introduction

Maternal and Child Health (KIA) is one of the most crucial basic health services efforts in improving the quality of life of the community. The primary goal of the MCH program is to enhance the health status of mothers and children, as well as reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. In the Medan Polonia Health Center, the MCH program aims to provide comprehensive health services to pregnant women and children. However, the implementation of this program still faces various challenges, such as lack of participation of pregnant women in activities that have been prepared.

The main focus of this study is on three MCH program activities carried out at the Polonia Health Center, namely Antenatal Services, HIV Screening, and Pregnant Women Classes. This research is descriptive with a qualitative approach, aiming to get a comprehensive picture of the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants and also using secondary data obtained from the Puskesmas.

Background of the Study

Maternal and Child Health (KIA) is a crucial aspect of public health, as it directly affects the quality of life of mothers and children. The MCH program is designed to provide comprehensive health services to pregnant women and children, including antenatal care, HIV screening, and education on maternal and child health. The primary goal of the MCH program is to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, as well as improve the overall health status of mothers and children.

In Indonesia, the MCH program is implemented at the primary health care level, which includes health centers and sub-district health centers. The Polonia Health Center is one of the health centers in Medan that provides MCH services to the community. However, the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center still faces various challenges, such as lack of participation of pregnant women in activities that have been prepared.

Methodology

This study uses a qualitative approach to explore the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center. The data was collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants, including health workers and community members. The interviews were conducted to gather information on the implementation of the MCH program, including the strengths and weaknesses of the program.

In addition to the in-depth interviews, secondary data was also obtained from the Puskesmas. The secondary data includes information on the number of pregnant women who have received antenatal care, HIV screening, and education on maternal and child health. The secondary data was used to analyze the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center.

Research Findings

The results of the study showed that the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center had not been running optimally. Several factors that influence the implementation of the MCH program include:

Number and Quality of Health Workers

The number of existing health workers is still lacking to meet the needs of maternal and child health services. In addition, service quality is also influenced by lack of adequate training for health workers.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Infrastructure and facilities in the Polonia Health Center are also considered inadequate. One crucial example is the absence of tools for HIV screening, which should be part of maternal health services. This certainly has an impact on the quality of services provided to the community.

Community Participation

The level of community participation in the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center is still relatively low. This may be caused by a lack of clear socialization or information about the benefits and importance of participating in these activities.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study, several recommendations are proposed to improve the implementation of the MCH program:

Improving the Quality of Health Workers

It is expected that there is an increase in the quality of health workers through training and professional development. The addition of two health staff is also highly recommended to optimize services.

Improvement of Facilities and Infrastructure

It is important to complete the facilities and infrastructure needed in the implementation of the MCH program, including the procurement of tools for HIV screening.

Increasing Communication with the Community

In order for the community to participate more in the MCH program, health workers need to improve communication and socialization. Educating the public about the benefits of following the MCH program is an important step to increase participation.

Conclusion

The implementation of maternal and child health programs at the 2018 Polonia Puskesmas in Medan shows that there are various challenges that need to be overcome so that health services for mothers and children can run more optimally. By implementing the proposed recommendations, it is expected that the quality of maternal and child health can be increased, as well as maternal and infant mortality rates can be reduced. This will not only have a positive impact on individuals, but also for society as a whole.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the limited scope of the study. The study only focused on the implementation of the MCH program at the Polonia Health Center, and did not explore the broader context of maternal and child health in Indonesia.
