Introduction

Corn farming is one of the most significant agricultural activities in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. In the Karo Regency, North Sumatra, corn farming is a major source of income for many farmers. However, the efficiency and productivity of corn farming in this region have been a subject of concern for many years. This study aims to analyze the production efficiency and income of corn farming in Kuala Village, Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency. The study includes several main objectives: knowing corn production in the area, analyzing the level of production efficiency, calculating the amount of revenue and income of farming, and analyzing the value of return cost ratio (R/C) and Break Even Point (BEP) both in volume and price.

Methodology

The study was conducted in Kuala Village, Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency, which is one of the regions with the highest corn production in North Sumatra. The sample used in this study consisted of 82 farmers, determined through the simple random sampling method using the Slovin formula. This study involved various analytical methods, including descriptive methods to provide a general picture of corn production in the study area, Cobb-Douglas function analysis with the help of SPSS software, and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to determine efficiency, revenue and income analysis, and analysis R/C and BEP.

Results

The results of this study showed some interesting findings regarding the efficiency and productivity of corn farming in Kuala Village. First, the efficiency value for each production input shows a number below 1, which indicates that the use of inputs such as seeds (0.141), fertilizers (0.033), herbicides (0.022), and labor (0.014) is inefficient. This indicates the need to reduce the amount of use of each input to increase production efficiency. Overall, the value of technical efficiency obtained is 0.94125, also shows the level of inefficiency.

Second, the amount of revenue from corn farming in this area reaches Rp 2,709,525,000.00 with a production cost of Rp 1,513,197,460.00, so the total net income obtained by farmers is Rp 1,196,327,540.00. Revenue per hectare reaches Rp 9,650,915.94, which shows that corn farming in this area provides significant results for farmers.

Third, the R/C value obtained from the study is 1.79, which means greater than 1. This shows that corn farming in the village of Kuala is feasible to continue and provide sufficient benefits for farmers. In addition, the value of BEP volume calculated is 540,722 kg, and BEP prices reach Rp 1,572.97. Both of these numbers illustrate that corn production needs to reach a certain figure to cover production costs.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that corn farming in Kuala Village has good potential, although there are aspects of efficiency that need to be improved. Efforts to optimize the use of production input and increase farmers' knowledge in farming techniques can be a strategic step to increase efficiency and income. Therefore, support from the government and related institutions in providing training and access to better agricultural technology is very necessary to maximize the potential of corn farming in this area.
