Liquid Detergent Toxicity Test on the Survival of Tilapia Seeds (Oreochromis niloticus)

The use of liquid detergent in daily life has become a common practice, but it often causes environmental problems when the waste is discharged directly into water sources without adequate processing. In this study, we aim to determine the toxic effects caused by liquid detergent on the survival of tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) seeds.

Liquid detergent is a widely used household product that contains a mixture of surfactants, builders, and other additives. In this study, we used 700 tilapia seeds with a size between 3-5 cm and weighing between 0.65 to 0.78 grams. We conducted a toxicity test with several concentrations of liquid detergent, namely 0 ppm, 17.78 ppm, 31.62 ppm, 56.23 ppm, and 100 ppm, with three repetitions for each concentration. The data obtained were analyzed using the Hubbert method. The results showed that liquid detergents function as a toxic to fish, where higher detergent concentrations increase the level of toxicity.

The analysis showed that the concentration of liquid detergent for LC50 at 96 hours was 79.4 ppm. This means that the liquid detergent solution at a concentration of 79.4 ppm is able to kill 50% of the fish population tested within 96 hours. Increasing the concentration of detergent in the aquatic environment has a negative impact, such as a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels (DO) and increased water temperature. Both of these environmental factors are very crucial, because both of them contribute to the death of fish in the waters.

In the ecological context, the toxicity test of tilapia is very important. Fish is an indicator of water quality, and fish death due to detergent pollution can show degradation of aquatic environmental health. In addition, the impact of detergent waste is not only felt by aquatic biota, but can also extend to humans who rely on these water sources for daily needs.

The chemicals contained in detergent can interact with various organisms, causing disruption in the aquatic ecosystem. Excessive use of detergent in household activities must be watched out, especially related to how to manage it after use. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that liquid detergent has a significant toxic effect on the survival of tilapia seeds. Therefore, more attention must be given to the way of disposal of detergent waste to maintain water quality and protect aquatic life. Good mitigation and management efforts can help prevent further pollution and ensure the survival of aquatic species. With this knowledge, it is hoped that the community can be wiser in using and removing household products that have the potential to pollute the environment.
