Comparison of the Existence of Mycobacterium leprae on the Ground with Polymerase Chain Reaction Techniques in Residential Areas Former Leprosy with Leprosy Sufferers on Sicanang Island Medan Belawan

Introduction

Leprosy, a chronic bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, remains a significant health concern in many countries, including Indonesia. Despite the implementation of the multi-treatment therapy program for over 20 years, efforts to control and eliminate leprosy continue to face challenges. One of the reasons for this is the presence of various environmental sources of leprosy transmission, such as soil, plants, water, arthropods, and armadillo animals. This study aims to investigate the difference in the existence of M. Leprae in the soil of residential areas former leprosy sufferers and settlements without leprosy sufferers on Sicanang Island, Medan Belawan, using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique.
