Introduction

The increasing demand for renewable energy sources has led to the development of new methods for producing biodiesel from various feedstocks, including castor oil. One of the key challenges in the production of biodiesel is the transesterification process, which requires the use of catalysts to facilitate the reaction. In this study, we examine the effect of Magnesium Oxide (MGO) mass variations that are impregnated in silica mesopori materials, as well as their use as catalysts in the transesterification of castor oil.

Materials and Methods

The impregnation process was carried out using the magnesium nitrate hexahidrate (Mg(NO3)2.6H2O) in three mass variations, namely 2.25 g, 3.025 g, and 3.75 g. The mesopori silica levels used in this test range from a ratio of 1: 3, 1: 4, and 1: 5 with Mg(NO3)2.6H2O. The impregnation process involved mixing silica material with Mg(NO3)2.6H2O, which had been dissolved in dry methanol, and stirring for 8 hours at room temperature. The mixture was then dried in the oven and the calcination process was carried out at 650 °C for 8 hours.

The resulting product was then used as a catalyst in castor oil transesterification. The transesterification process was carried out by mixing castor oil, mesopori silica catalysts that were impregnated with MGO, and methanol, at 65 °C for 4 hours.

Characterization of the Impregnated Material

The product characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). FT-IR data showed the presence of Silanol (Si-OH) and Siloxsan (Si-O-Si) groups, which are characteristic of the resulting material. The XRD results showed the diffraction peak widening at an angle of 12 ° to 38 °, indicating that the resulting material was silica in the amorphous form. The appearance of a typical diffraction peak of MGO at an angle of 2θ 36.45 °, 41.74 °, and 62.81 ° was also observed.

The BET results showed the isothermal type IV curve and Hicteresis type H3 loop, with pore sizes that dominated the silica material before and after impregnation of 4.7 Nm and 4.67 Nm, which are included in the mesopori size category.

Transesterification Results

The transesterification results were analyzed using GC-MS and FT-IR. The FT-IR spectrum showed the formation of methyl ester risinoleate, which is marked by the appearance of strain vibrations from the C-O-C group in the wave number 1242.16 cm⁻¹. From the GC-MS results, the three catalysts imposed showed the best results in the MSME-MGO catalyst with a ratio of 1: 3, which provided a methyl ester risinoleic acid conversion of 63.91%.

Discussion

This study provides an important insight into the application of Silica mesopori material impregnated with MGO in the transesterification process. One of the factors that influence the success of this reaction is the physical and chemical characteristics of the catalyst. Silica mesopori material has a high surface area and regular pore structure, so it is very effective in increasing the reaction speed.

The use of MGO as a catalyst is very interesting because of its ability to accelerate the transesterification process without requiring high temperature and pressure, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The MGO mass variation that is impregnated also shows that the ratio of 1: 3 gives the most optimal results, so it is important to pay attention to the ratio of components in the development of more efficient catalysts.

In conclusion, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of Silica mesopori material impregnated with MGO as a catalyst in the transesterification of castor oil. The results show that the MGO mass variation that is impregnated has a significant impact on the transesterification process, and the ratio of 1: 3 gives the most optimal results. This study contributes to the development of new methods to produce biodiesel from castor oil, which is a renewable energy source.
