Nutritional problems have become one of the main health issues in Indonesia, a country that faces dual nutrition challenges, including excessive malnutrition and nutrition. As a developing country, Indonesia has long experienced malnutrition cases, but changes in consumption patterns, economic progress, and lack of knowledge about nutrition have caused an increase in excess nutrition. One of the main problems that arises from this condition is obesity.

The Prevalence of Obesity in Aceh Province

Based on the 2015 Aceh Province health profile, it was found that 17% of adult male populations and 20% of adult female populations were obese. The results of the initial survey conducted in Titi Pasir Village, Semadam District showed that of the 66 adults, there were 15.15% who were overweight, 74.24% were obese, and 10.60% had normal body weight. The eating habits of the Gayo tribe in Titi Pasir Village are closely related to the high consumption of carbohydrates and fats, as well as low diversity of food.

The Purpose and Methodology of the Study

The purpose of this study was to describe the diet and the incidence of obesity in the Gayo tribe community in Titi Pasir Village, Semadam District, Southeast Aceh Regency in 2017. This study used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The population studied consisted of adults of the Gayo tribe aged 19-44 years, with a total of 863 people and 90 samples were taken.

The Results of the Study

The results showed that 87.8% of Gayo's eating patterns were not diverse. Meanwhile, energy adequacy is classified as a percentage of 75.6%, the adequacy of carbohydrates is also classified as a percentage of 57.8%, protein adequacy of 82.2%, and fat adequacy of 67.8%. The status of obesity among the Gayo tribal community is 67.8% experiencing obesity, while 32.2% did not experience obesity.

This data illustrates that eating patterns that are dominated by high carbohydrate and fat foods, as well as the lack of variations in food choices, contributes greatly to the high number of obesity. In the midst of this public health challenge, it is essential for the Southeast Aceh District Health Office, the local Puskesmas, and health workers to actively conduct counseling on obesity problems. Educational activities on healthy and balanced eating patterns need to be improved to increase public awareness of the negative impact of obesity, including the risk of degenerative diseases that can arise as a consequence.
