Introduction

The study of Mandarin language has become increasingly popular in recent years, with many students around the world seeking to learn this complex and nuanced language. This study aims to investigate the types of negation sentences in Mandarin that are easy and difficult to master by students, describe the level of mastery of the negation sentence, and explain the factors that influence the mastery of the negation sentences in Mandarin among Mandarin Study Program students in FIB University of North Sumatra.

Background

Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the same word can have different meanings depending on the tone in which it is spoken. This can make it difficult for learners to understand and use the language correctly. Negation sentences in Mandarin are particularly challenging because they often involve the use of multiple particles and grammatical structures. Research Methodology

This study used a descriptive qualitative research method to investigate the mastery of negation sentences in Mandarin among students of the Mandarin FIB Study Program at the University of North Sumatra. The data used in this study consisted of negation sentences, with primary data sources originating from students of the Mandarin FIB USU Language Study Program for the 2018/2019 Academic Year. Data collection techniques included tests, observation, and questionnaires. After the data is collected, the analysis is carried out using the Padan method. The techniques used in data analysis include sorting techniques for determining elements and comparative connecting techniques.

The results of the study showed several important findings:

Students more easily master the words of negation such as 不 (bù), 没 (méi), 不要 (bú yào), 不用 (bú yòng), 别 (bié), 无 (wú), and 非 (fēi). On the other hand, the word negation that is most difficult to master is 未 (wèi).

Learning Process

Mastery of Negation Sentences in Mandarin Facilitated by giving stimulus for 800 minutes (50 minutes per meeting for 16 meetings). This process is accompanied by motivation and reinforcement, which contributes to the positive responses of 46 respondents' students. There is a significant increase in the average score, where 23 students managed to get the final score A.

The study found that several factors influence the mastery of negation sentences in Mandarin among students of the Mandarin Study Program at the University of North Sumatra. These factors include:
