Study of Layer Thickness Planning Methods Plus Flexible Pavement

Introduction

The thickness of layers added or overlaid is a common solution adopted to improve the quality of roads that have reached critical or damaged conditions. However, inappropriate planning can result in a fast way to damage (under design) or even create construction that is not economical (over design). Many factors can affect the accuracy of overlay planning, one of which is the selection of the planning method used. In this study, we will explore the three most commonly used methods, including component analysis, deflection analysis, and mechanistic analysis, and compare their advantages and disadvantages.

Background

Over time, the overlay planning method has undergone many changes. The selection of the planning method used is a crucial factor in determining the accuracy of overlay planning. In this study, we will focus on the deflection analysis method based on existing surface deflection. Three approaches analyzed include RDS, the Asphalt Institute MS-17 (1983) method, and the Bina Marga Method No: PD T-05-2005-B. These methods are widely used in Indonesia and have been adopted by various road planners and stakeholders.

Methodology

To compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method, a simulation of the Cumulative Equivalent Standard Axle (CESA) calculation analysis is carried out, the uniformity factor (FK), and the thickness of overlay. The calculation results show a significant difference in the CESA results and the overlay calculation. The difference is caused by several factors, including differences in Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF), the level of uniformity of deflection data, as well as environmental factors such as temperature and season, as well as the type of pavement used.

Results

Interestingly, the CESA calculation using the PD T-05-2005-B method gives greater results compared to the RDS and MS-17 methods. This is because the two procedures do not consider the overloading criteria in the CESA calculation. On the other hand, when doing an overlay design, the RDS method produces thinner thickness compared to MS-17 and PD T-05-2005-B. The reason is that RDS uses a more conservative type of hot rolled sheet (HRS) for various conditions in Indonesia.

Discussion

The selection of appropriate planning methods is very important in road management and maintenance. By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each method, more efficient and economical planning can be produced. Through this study, it is expected to provide additional insights for road planners and related stakeholders in improving transportation infrastructure in Indonesia.
